Zotero

Get started with the citation management system Zotero.

Using the Browser Plugin

Once you have downloaded to Zotero connector for your web browser, you can easily save references by simply clicking on the Zotero icon in your plugins bar. On Google Chrome, this plugin will be in the top right corner of your browser (as shown in the screenshot below). The plugin may have the Zotero "Z" icon, or it may display an icon that represents the type of resource displayed on your web browser (such as a document icon for an article or a book icon for an e-book). When you click on the icon, Zotero will save information about your reference, such as the title, author, journal name, etc. and create an "item" for the reference. It may also attach a full-text PDF of your reference, if that is available.

If your reference is not saving, then you may need to open to Zotero desktop app and connect it with your web browser plugin.

Updating References Manually

You can also input Zotero references manually from the web or desktop app, or edit references that have automatically been added to your library.

From your library, click on the "New Item" button located right above your list of references. On desktop, this button looks like a document with a plus sign next to it; on the web app, the button is just a plus sign. After clicking on the button, you must choose from a long list of different resource types, including book, journal article, interview, etc. Select the resource type that most closely matches your reference. The resource type will determine what fields you may fill in your reference. Most resource types will include a field for author, title, date, URL, date accessed, and abstract, among other fields specific to certain resources. You can also attach a file or web link to the item and add notes. If you attach a file to the item, you will be able to open that file directly in Zotero. The item will automatically save and update as you fill out the fields.

To edit an item, simply click once on its title from your library or folder. If you double click, then any attached files will open instead. It is recommended that you open and check any items that you save from the browser plugin to make sure that Zotero accurately recorded all information into the proper fields.
