RefWorks

This guide provides help and instructions on accessing and using RefWorks, a citation management system.

Exporting from Library Search

You can export a source from Library Search two ways. From your search results list, click on the three dot menu to the right of the source title (the show options menu). The menu will appear. From here, click on the RefWorks option. RefWorks will open in a new window and you will have the option to import the source to one of your projects.

You can also click on the title of a source to open up the full details (or record) of the source. This will automatically include the "more options" menu where you can click on the RefWorks icon to export the citation.

Exporting from EBSCO

Exporting sources from EBSCO is very similar to exporting from Library Search. Use the options menu to select the "Cite" option.

In the "Cite" menu, select "Export citation" and "Export to RefWorks".

You can open the details of the source (also called the record) by clicking on the title and export the citation from that page as well.

Adding a Citation Manually

It's easy to add a reference manually to your RefWorks database! Choose the plus sign and do one of the following:

  1. If you have a pdf of an article saved to your computer, simply drag and drop it into RefWorks. In most cases, RefWorks will be able to extract the citation information from the pdf.

  2. Choose the citation type (journal article, book, etc.) and start typing the title or author. RefWorks will try to find a match in the Summon database. If it does, just choose that and it will import the citation information.

  3. If there is still citation information missing after you try these two things, you can add or edit any of the fields for the item you are adding.
