ENG 3810: Grammar and Writing: Language Variation Analysis

Assignment Goals

  • Analyze a dialect of American English and demonstrate an understanding of variations in vocabulary, grammar, and word choice.
  • Gain an understanding and an appreciation for a dialect that you do not already speak.
  • Consider the best way to teach students in the United States about language variation.
  • Design lesson plans to raise awareness about one of the dialects and create an opportunity for students to code-mesh.

In class we have been exploring interrelationship between language, culture, society, and identity. This assignment will allow you to gain understanding and appreciation for language variation in the United States. You now know that in American English several varieties are spoken. These differences are referred to as dialects, and they reflect differences in vocabulary, pronunciation, and syntax, aka grammar.
