Get curious about your career options: Industry-specific magazines (trade publications)

Search for articles in trade publications

What is a trade publication?

Trade publications are aimed specifically at workers in a certain trade, profession, or industry and include articles about trends, news, and practices in the field.

Why should I search in trade publications?

Browsing through some recent trade publications can give you some ideas for what professionals in that field are working on or discussing. This can give you a sense of whether or not you have an interest in the work they do.

Where can I access trade publications?

Additional trade publications can be found using the EBSCO suite of databases. Use the "source types" filter in the column on the left. Place a check mark in the box next to "trade publications".

What do I type in the database to find relevant articles?

Best practice is to combine 2-3 keywords or phrases to find articles that contain each of them.

1. In the first search box, start with one keyword or phrase that describes a job title, profession, career, or a specific industry or company.

2. In the second search box, add a general keyword such as: trend*, news, issue*, future, projection*, technology, employment, job*, career*, skill*, "case study", "best practices", implication*, indicator*, survey, economics, development, application

3. If one combination doesn't work, try replacing at least one of your keywords with another.

Examples of keyword combinations

"interior design" AND technology

"social media" AND marketing
