Embedding Library Content into Canvas: Custom Library Modules

The Library customized for you in Canvas

Librarians and Canvas

We can work with you to help improve the quality of your students' research assignments. Below are a few of the possible ways we can further integrate library resources and instruction into your course:

  • Librarians can create a module or page in your Canvas shell with links to library resources and supporting information tailored to your course assignments.
  • Embed your subject librarian into the Canvas course to offer one-on-one, online research assistance for students.
  • Collaborate to integrate library research skills into the course curriculum, possibly adding videos, a librarian led discussion, or a librarian-graded quiz.

Library Module Examples

IN A MODULE

Your librarian can prepare a module containing links to library resources and supporting information such as tutorials and handouts. Modules can also include assessments such as quizzes or assignments.  Any components can be modified or removed as needed.

AS A STANDALONE CONTENT PAGE

Library resources and supporting materials can also be formatted as a content page.

How to Get a Custom Library Module

Contact your instruction librarian/team to discuss what kind of Canvas integration would work best for your courses.  If you are not sure who is your librarian, contact Vera Lux at vlux@bgsu.edu or 419-806-5808

How to Create a Library Module

You can also create your own module using the persistent and proxied links to resources listed in the Content to Embed in Canvas tab.

Embedding a Librarian

What’s an Embedded Librarian?

An embedded librarian is a librarian that is integrated into an online class for a period of time to support the students in their research process.

Why do I need an embedded librarian?

Many students need help knowing what resources and services are available to them. An embedded librarian will provide support for these students.

What could an embedded librarian do for your class?

  • provide information about the library's databases, e-books and services
  • help students find credible sources
  • help narrow topics and brainstorm ideas for research
  • identify keywords and search terms for a topic
  • answer questions about the library or research
