What is a Folktale?

A folktale is a form of traditional, fictional, prose narrative that is said to circulate orally.  In both colloquial use and within folkloristics, the term "folktale" is often used interchangeably with 'fairy tale."

Haase, D. (2007). The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Folktales and Fairy Tales: Volume 1: A-F. Westport: Greenwood

Unconventional retellings, modifications, variants, and fractured tales are all based on traditional tales but details are changed, plotlines twisted, and settings altered to make the story slightly or greatly changed from the original.   Another type are those that are familiar but come from cultures foreign to Anglo Americans.  They coincide with western story types but the stories themselves are native to other cultures.
