Film and Television Music Resources: Carl Morgan Collection of Motion Picture Soundtracks

Research guide to finding library and internet sources on film music studies

Carl Morgan Collection of Fim Music

Carl Morgan, a collector of motion picture soundtracks, generously donated his collection to the Music Library and Bill Schurk Sound Archives in 2019. Morgan collected widely and his collection contains many soundtrack and movie theme compilations, soundtracks from film classics and art films, Italian and other foreign film soundtracks, and some soundtracks from genre films, including indie and low-budget horror, fantasy, and sci-fi films. In addition, Morgan collected the work of many classic film composers, including Riz Ortolani, Jerry Goldsmith, Ennio Morricone, and Francis Lai, among others.

Morgan's collection contains mostly CDs, LPs, and 45rpm singles; many of the singles have the original picture sleeves. There are smaller numbers of 78rpm discs of various sizes and 10-inch 33rpm records.

The Morgan collection is browsable in our catalog, but since it contains thousands of recordings, targeted searching is the best strategy for finding relevant items.

Since the collection is in our library catalog along with our other materials, the instructions for searching for film recordings in this guide also apply to this collection.
