Workshop Descriptions & Schedule

Fast Track and Summon: How instructors can use these tools to scaffold student learning

Instructors may think of students as being “tech-savvy,” but they also worry that students aren’t “research-savvy.”  To increase the research skills of students, the University Libraries created Fast Track, a guide that can be used flexibly by instructors and students to identify and evaluate sources and research tools.

Included in the Fast Track guide are instructions for Summon, the Libraries new powerful discovery tool that searches across many research databases and the University Libraries catalog to retrieve quality research materials. Summon’s interface is very much like using a Google search box.

This workshop introduces instructors to Fast Track and Summon; participants will discuss integrating these tools within their courses, and more specifically see how they can use them in their classes to assist students in finding sources for their research assignments.

Presenters:  Amy Fyn

RefWorks

Description: This workshop will introduce attendees to RefWorks, a web-based bibliographic management system. Wish there was an easier way to keep track of reference citations used for your research papers? Tired of retyping and reformatting bibliographies and works cited lists? Wouldn’t it be easier to locate a needed article if all your citations were in an organized database? Take a guided tour of RefWorks and start building your own database right away!

Presenters: Linda Rich & Ed Weilant

Researching for a Literature Review

Description: This workshop will introduce attendees to what a literature review is, what it is used for, and how to begin the research process to create one. We will learn skills to explode/expand search strategies to be exhaustive and practice thinking through the research process. Finding a variety of source types and using bibliographies to extend a search backwards will also be covered.

Presenter: Amy Fyn
