Historic Age and Sex Data

One of your assignments is to find age by sex data from 1940 through 2000. Most of this data is not available in an electronic format so we've compiled it in an excel spreadsheet for you. You will need to go to the American Factfinder to retrieve the 2000 data.

The Census

The need for a nationwide census arose after the Revolutionary War. It was necessary to determine the population of each state so that each could be taxed equitably, on the basis of the number of inhabitants residing in the state. A population count would also help to determine the number of Congressional Representatives each state would be allowed.

The first census of population and housing was published in 1790 and continues to be released every ten years. Plans are underway for the next census which will be in 2010.

This guide will introduce you to census terms and concepts, and will give you hands on practice finding census data at American FactFinder

Census 2000 Topics The briefs are a series of slide shows which focus on discussing the most important aspects of the topics, as well as exploring the geographic distribution of the subject matter.
