Consider This!

Google, and other web sites and search tools, now personalize search results and advertisements based on individual characteristics, like age, location, and gender. Online political organizer Eli Pariser claims that these steps to personalize the Internet actually come with a high price and threaten our access to a broader range of information.  Watch this video of his presentation at TEDX and consider his argument.

Explore Your Topic

Need some help exploring search terms for your topic?  Try one of these tools to generate or identify potential keywords:

  • Selecting the Right Number of Keywords
A nautical look at picking keywords from Kimbel Library, home of humorous videos.
  • How to Generate Keywords for Your Research Topic
This interactive tool guides you through the process of creating an effective keyword search for your research topic and then allows you to email the results to yourself and/or your instructor. Created by librarians at the University of Texas at Austin.
  • Lexipedia: An Interactive Graphical Dictionary
You enter a word and it displays the related nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, synonyms and more, on an interactive spider web chart. You can view all the related words on the chart or view only related nouns, verbs, adjectives etc. by clicking on the left bar.

Core Concepts

Whether you're searching Summon, Google, or a database, several general core research concepts apply.  Check the help pages of any tool for more specific guidelines.
