ARTH 3110: Bronze Age Aegean Art: Finding images

Using ARTstor

ARTstor logo

ARTstor is an online database of over a million high-quality digital images, most from museum collections. Each image contains descriptive data such as its date, medium, dimensions, and current location, making it an ideal tool for art historians!

Tips on using ARTstor

  1. Use the simple search box on the home screen or the upper right of any results page. Link variables of the same place name with OR to get more results (ex.: Cyclades or Cycladic), or use an asterisk (*) for truncation (ex.: Cyclad* would find records that use either "Cyclades" or "Cycladic" in their descriptions).
  2. Use the date slider above the search results after doing a search if you need to narrow it.
  3. You can also narrow by geography using the options on the left - choose "Greece" for objects from Aegean Bronze Age cultures.

6. You need to register for an ARTstor account in order to download images.

Museum collections online

One way to learn more about an artwork is to look for it on the website of the museum that owns it (something you can learn from its ARTstor record!). The museum's website is likely to have descriptive information about the object, an essay, and/or references to items published about the work.

The museums below may be good places to find Bronze Age Aegean artworks.
