There are thousands of publishers, and it is impossible to know the reputations of all of them. In general, if the publisher is a university press, such as Oxford University Press, the source is scholarly. Other publishers have excellent reputations and are well known in certain disciplines.
To find more information about a particular publisher, do a Google search using the publisher name in quotation marks. For example, "Neal-Schuman Publishers." Hint: Sometimes journal articles are published by professional organizations such as the Association of College and Research Libraries.
Visit some of these University Presses to get an idea of the different types of scholarly publications they produce.
