POLS 1710: Intro Comp Gov't (Slavens): Objectivity/Bias

Ask yourself the following

  • Are the assumptions the author makes reasonable?
  • Are the assumptions the author makes grounded in fact and research, not emotion?
  • Has the author researched extensively in this area?
  • Did the author cite other resources?
  • Are the author's resources difficult to verify?
  • Does the author use "charged" or inflammatory language?
  • Is the author trying to persuade or convince you of something?

Search Tips

  • When completing academic research projects, it is typically a good idea to stay away from opinion pieces or editorials.
  • Examine the language used in the source. Do you see any particularly charged or strong language?
  • Take a look at the sources at the end of the piece. Do any red flags jump out at you?
  • By checking out the author's credentials, does the piece you are looking at fit into a larger research agenda?

If you need help verifying sources, stop by the Research and Information Desk of Jerome Library for pointers.
