By 1964-1965, The Wailers were recording on the Dodd label. During this period, Marley met and fell in love with Rita Anderson. In 1966, Marley and Rita were married. While these were happy times, these were also years of financial hardships. Although Marley had established himself as a songwriter by 1968, he did not gain international attention until Eric Clapton covered "I Shot the Sheriff" in the 1970s. This version became Billboard's number one hit during the week of September 14, 1974.
