Searching Musical Form as Title

Underlined words are those that are to be typed into the computer.

Sample search:  Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, op. 125, d minor

Option 1: Author Search

  • Go to the BGSU Libraries catalog.

  • Click on the Author tab (a composer/performer search is the same as an author search). Type:  Beethoven (no punctuation or capitalization is necessary). Click on Search. Click on the entry with the largest set.
The retrieval set is very large for this composer. To avoid browsing numerous screens of recordings and scores, the Limit/Sort feature allows you to narrow your search.

  • Limit your search.

Under Material Type, select Sound Recording OR scroll down to the SOUND Recording menu and select CD, 33rpm, etc. (do not make a selection under both of these menus).

At this point, you may either click on the Submit button to find all recordings (or CDs, LPs, etc. if you chose to limit under the SOUND Recording menu) by Beethoven, or you may choose to limit further, which is generally a good choice in the case of prolific composers. To find symphonies by Beethoven, pull down the Words In menu; choose Words in Subject. Click in box to the right and type:  symphonies. Click on Submit.

Note: when searching for a musical form such as a sonata, symphony, etc., use the plural form of the word; the specific instrument is not necessary.

Another option is to limit by words in the title. Follow steps A and B, then choose Words in the TITLE from the Words In box. Type one of the following:

symphon* (to find all words in title with symphon as the root) or symphonies, then click on the Submit button.

Option 2: WORD Search

  • Go to the BGSU Libraries catalog.

  • In the first search box, choose Author from the Any Field drop-down menu and type:  beethoven.

  • In the next box, choose Subject from the drop-down menu and type:  symphonies; OR choose Title from the drop-down menu and type:  symphon*.

  • Under Material Type, select Sound Recording OR scroll down to the SOUND Recording menu and select CD, 33rpm, etc. (do not make a selection under both of these menus).

  • Click the Submit button.
